View Images
Image thumbnails
- Image thumbnails appear when you: perform a search; browse the collections; or open an image group. Thumbnails are displayed:
- To change the number of images you view per page, click on the arrow next to Images/page in the middle of the utility bar and select 24, 48, or 72 images per page.
- While viewing small thumbnails, place your mouse over an image thumbnail to see a larger version pop up.
- Single-click an image thumbnail to select it. A colored highlight appears around the thumbnail, indicating the selection.
- Double-click an image thumbnail to view it in the Image Viewer. For more information, see our help section about the Image Viewer.
- Click the navigational arrows on the right side of the utility bar to move between pages when you have more than 24 images. Or, type the page number you wish to see and hit enter. Click the desired sort order in the left side of the utility bar to sort your results three ways: by Title, Creator, or Date. These sort orders are also available by clicking Display options > Sort displayed images by.
As small thumbnails with a brief caption (this is the default view).
OR
As large thumbnails with a brief data record (this option is available by clicking Display options > Display large thumbnails).
Image data
- To view the full data record for a desired image:
- A descriptive data window will open. Click the desired tab to view information about the object, file properties (including the Image ID and URL link).
Click on the caption beneath a small image thumbnail.
OR
Click View Full Record, to the right of a large image thumbnail.
Please note: If you find any errors in the descriptive data for the image that you are viewing, you can notify Shared Shelf Commons directly by clicking on the "Report an Error" option in the lower right corner of the window.
Image Viewer
To view an image in a larger window, double-click the thumbnail to launch the Image Viewer in a new window. For more information about this feature, see the Image Viewer page.
Please note: the most common reason the Image viewer fails to load is a pop-up blocker is enabled. Please see our help section on disabling your pop-up blockers.
Download images
Entire image
- Double-click an image thumbnail to open the Image Viewer.
- Click
(the save icon) in the lower right corner. Please note: If you have zoomed or rotated the image but wish to save it in its entirety, click
(the reset icon) to restore the image to its original state.
- A window with Shared Shelf Common's Terms & Conditions of Use will open. Click Accept.
- Follow the on screen prompts to save. Do not rename the file at this time.
- When the download is complete, you will have two files: a JPEG of the image itself and a separate HTML file of the image data. You can now rename the files, being careful to use no special characters.
Detail of image
- Double-click an image thumbnail to open the Image Viewer.
- Zoom and pan within the image to find the detail that you would like to save.
- Click
(the save icon) in the lower right side of the window.
- A window with Shared Shelf Common's Terms & Conditions of Use will open. Click Accept.
- Follow the on screen prompts to save. Do not rename the file at this time.

Troubleshooting
If you have trouble downloading, please try the following:
- Verify popup blockers in your browser, in your search toolbars, and in your local security system are ALL disabled.
- If using Vista and/or Internet Explorer 7, add *.sscommons.org and *.sscommons.net as a trusted site.
- If you are using Safari, change your cookie settings to "always" accept cookies.
- Verify that you have the latest Java installed in your browser. You can download the latest Java at java.com.
- Check with your local IT if your network’s firewall could be blocking Shared Shelf Commons.
