More about browsing by geography

Standardized geographic terms have been applied to the descriptive data for ARTstor images, according to a controlled list of country names based on the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN). Geographic terms were assigned according to two different criteria: For site-specific works (architecture, mural painting, public monuments, etc.), the country term was assigned based on the location of the work. For objects now in repositories, country terms were assigned on the basis of the nationality of the creator. In cases where these two criteria overlapped (e.g. an American architect’s preparatory drawing for a building built in Spain), the records were assigned two country terms.

You can also search for images in ARTstor using these geographic terms, which are also available in the Advanced Search window. With the Advanced Search, you will be able to narrow your search results by limiting it to individual countries, or by broader geographic regions, such as "Europe" or "South America."

More about browsing by classification

ARTstor's Metadata team has developed a set of sixteen object classification terms and applied them to the data records for ARTstor images. While no one standard served as the basis for this classification scheme, the Metadata team consulted the Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT), among other vocabularies, when formulating these categories. Since the ARTstor Digital Library contains a sizeable number of images that are not works of art, but are used for reference or other pedagogical reasons, the “Humanities and Social Sciences” classification was added to a list that is primarily made up of object types. While the following list is by no means exhaustive, these sixteen classifications are meant to help users navigate the breadth and depth of ARTstor's content. In cases where a work shares the characteristics of more than one classification, that object has been assigned to all relevant categories.
