Each installation of the OIV must be authenticated the first time the program is opened, as well as every 120 days thereafter. Authentication only affects ARTstor content, and you can continue to use OIV with local content without authentication. But, as soon as you re-authenticate the software, ARTstor content will become available for use once again.

If you are using OIV on-campus at your institution, you are physically located within a valid IP range, so the OIV will renew its certificate automatically through IP authentication.

If you are using OIV off-campus, you will not be coming from an authorized IP address and will need to periodically authenticate the software. You can either authenticate when you are prompted at startup, or you can manually re-authenticate at any time.

Authentication prompt at startup

  1. When working off-campus, you will get prompted to authenticate OIV the first time that you open the program after installing the software, as well as every 120 days thereafter. When the certificate must be renewed, you will see the following dialog upon startup:
  2. Click on the "Authenticate Now" button.
  3. A new window will open, prompting you to log onto your ARTstor account. Enter your ARTstor email address and password and then click on the "OK" button.
  4. A new window will open, confirming the authentication and displaying the date for the re-authentication (120 days afterwards). Click on the "OK" button to close the window and complete the process.
If you are not able to log onto your ARTstor account to re-authenticate OIV, please see: Remote access.
  5. You can wait until the displayed date to renew the certificate, at which time the same dialog pictured in step #1 will automatically appear upon startup. Repeat steps #1-4 to re-authenticate the software for another 120 days.

Manual authentication

You may manually re-authenticate OIV at any time.

  1. Click on the "Help" toolbar menu and select the "Authenticate OIV" option.
  2. A new window will open, displaying the date when the current installation of OIV needs to be re-authenticated.
  3. Click on the "Authenticate Now" button.
  4. A new window will open, prompting you to log onto your ARTstor account (pictured above in step #3).
  5. Enter your ARTstor email address and password, and then click on the "OK" button.
  6. A new window will open up, confirming the authentication and displaying the date for the re-authentication (120 days afterwards). Click on the "OK" button to close the window and complete the process. You now have another 120 days of use before having to re-authenticate.

Quick Tips

  • Remember, even if you are not able to re-authenticate OIV, you may continue to use OIV with your own local images. Authentication is only necessary for viewing ARTstor content. Also, you will not lose any work after the expiration date, as the ARTstor content will be automatically available once as soon as you re-authenticate the software.

  • As it gets closer to the authentication expiration date, you may see a dialog when you start up the program, informing you that your certificate is about to expire. If you would rather not see these expiration warnings, check the box next to "Do not show this again" in the message window. You may also go to the "View" toolbar menu, slide your mouse to the right of "Dialogs," and then un-check the "Show certificate expiration warnings" option.
