  4. A new window opens, with both PC and Mac versions of the program. For detailed instructions specific to your operating system please see:

For PCs

  1. In the OIV download window the PC version will be pre-selected for you. Click Download. Please note: You may choose to download the format for a different operating system; please see: Installing OIV 4.0 for Macs.
  2. In the new window that opens, click Save and if prompted choose a location for the installation file in the computer directory. You can also choose to save the OIV installation file (OIV_4.0_Win_Install.zip) onto a disk, CD, or removable drive. This way, you can install the OIV onto any other computer without having to download the installation file through ARTstor online, which can be helpful if you need to transport presentation files to remote locations. A new window will open, tracking the progress of the download. Once the process is complete, locate the downloaded file on your computer.
  3. Double-click the file that you just downloaded: OIV_4.0_Win_Install.zip. A new window will open, displaying the contents of the .zip file: oiv_installer.exe. Double-click the oiv_setup.exe file icon in this window.
  4. A new window will open, which will guide you through installing the OIV software. Click Next to begin the process. A second window will open, prompting you to select a folder where the OIV will be installed. In most cases, you can leave the default location (C:\Program Files\ARTstor\OIV\) and click the "Next" button to proceed. If you would like to choose a different location, click Browse. Then, use your computer's directory to select a location. Click Next to proceed.
  5. The next window that appears will prompt you to launch the installation. Click Install to begin the process. Once the process is complete, a final window will appear to confirm the completed installation. Click Finish.
  6. Start the newly installed OIV program. You may either:
    • Double-click the program shortcut icon on your Desktop; or
    • Go to the Start menu and select OIV from the list of programs installed on your computer (Start > Programs > ARTstor > OIV).
Please note: If you installed the OIV program while logged in as the computer's administrator, you will need to log off, then log in again as a normal user before starting the program for the first time. Otherwise, users may have difficulty re-authenticating the software when needed. For more information, please see: Authentication.
  7. When the program opens for the first time, a Getting Started guide will appear, asking you "What you would like to do?" You can choose to create a new presentation (from ARTstor images or your own local images), or open an existing presentation (one created in OIV or in PowerPoint). Click the radio button next to an option and then click OK to begin using OIV. This Getting Started guide will appear each time you start the OIV program. You may check the box at the bottom of the window so that this dialog no longer appears at startup.
  8. If you are using OIV while off campus, the first time that you open the program after installation you may see a window prompting you to authenticate the software. You can do this by clicking on the "Authenticate Now" button and entering the email address and password for your ARTstor account. For more information, please see: Authentication.

For Macs

Quick Tip: For best performance we recommend you delete any previous installation of OIV. To do this, simply drag the existing OIV icon from your Applications folder to the trash, then empty the trash before proceeding.

  1. In the OIV download window the Mac version will be pre-selected for you; click Download. Please note: You can download the installation file for a different operating system; see Installing OIV 4.0 for PCs. To download an older version of the OIV compatible with OSX 10.3.x , click the link at the bottom of the window.
  2. In the new window that opens, click Save and if prompted choose a location for the installation file in the computer directory. You can also choose to save the OIV_4.0_Mac_Install.zip file onto a disk, CD, or removable drive, for installation on another machine. This is helpful if you need to transport presentation files to remote locations.
  3. Once the installation file is saved, double-click on the OIV_4.0_Mac_Install.zip icon to expand it into OIV4.0.dmg. Please note: Depending on your local set-up, some steps may be automated (e.g. by double-clicking on the zip file, your computer may will automatically perform steps #9-10).
  4. Double-click the OIV4.0.dmg icon. A new installation window will open containing an OIV icon. Drag and drop that OIV icon into your Applications folder. You can now close the window and remove the OIV_4.0_Mac_Install.zip and OIV4.0.dmg icons from your desktop by dragging and dropping them into the Trash.
  5. Double-click the program icon in the Applications folder to launch the OIV. A Getting Started guide will appear, asking you "What you would like to do?" You can choose to create a new presentation (from ARTstor images or your own local images), or open an existing presentation (whether one created in OIV or in PowerPoint). Please note: If you do not wish to see the Getting Started guide each time you start OIV, you can click View > Dialogs and uncheck the option to Show getting started wizard on startup."
  6. If you are using OIV while off campus, the first time that you open the program after installation, you may see a window prompting you to authenticate the software. You can do this by clicking on the "Authenticate Now" button and entering the email address and password for your ARTstor account. For more information, please see: Authentication.
