Open an image group
- Open an image group from any location in ARTstor:
- A new window will open displaying a list of the folders available to you. Click the plus sign (+) next to a folder title to expand it and display its contents. Click the minus sign (-) to collapse an expanded folder.
- Click an image group name and then click Open. The dialog box will close and the contents of the selected group will appear as thumbnails.
From the Search & Browse page, go to the FOLDERS AND IMAGE GROUPS area in the center of the page and click Open.
OR
Go to the ARTstor navigation menu and click Organize > Open image group.
OR
Log in to your ARTstor account and go to the My ARTstor area in the upper right corner of the Welcome page. Click My folders & image groups.
Quick Tip: Open image group in separate window
If you are already viewing a page of thumbnail images and you would like to open an image group in a new window rather than on a separate page of thumbnails, check the box next to "Open group in separate window" before clicking Open in step #3 above. This will open the image group in a new window on the right side of the page. You may drag images from search results, collection categories, or other groups directly into this window.
Create an image group
- Log in to your ARTstor account. Learn more about registering for an account.
- Search or browse ARTstor's collections to find images for your group.
- Select images by single-clicking image thumbnails. The thumbnail border will change color to indicate your selection. Click again to de-select. Images will be saved to your image group in the order that you select them.
- In the ARTstor navigation menu click Organize > Save selected images to > New image group. Or, you may right- (or Control-) click with your mouse to display a shortcut menu. Right-click Save selected images to > New image group.
- A new window will open displaying a list of the folders available to you. Click a folder title to choose a destination for your image group. To expand a folder, click the plus sign (+) next to the folder name. To collapse an expanded folder, click the minus sign (-). Enter a name for your image group in the field provided at the bottom of the window. When naming image groups, do not use symbols (e.g., ? /\ <>+ # %) or diacritics (e.g., é å ï ñ ô).
- Click Save at the bottom of the window to save your changes. Or, you can click Save & Open button to view your saved group as a page of thumbnails.
- To add additional images to this group, repeat steps #1-4.
- In step 4, click Save selected images to > Existing image group.
- In the new window that opens, click the plus sign (+) next to a folder title to expand its contents. Then, click the desired image group title.
- Click Save or Save & Open to save the additional images to the group.

Edit an image group
Once you have saved an image group, you can edit it by adding and deleting images, as well as rearranging and sorting them.
Add images to an image group
- Log in to your ARTstor account. Learn more about registering for an account.
- Search or browse ARTstor's collections to find images for your group.
- Select images by single-clicking image thumbnails. The thumbnail border will change color to indicate your selection. Click again to de-select. Images will be saved to your image group in the order that you select them.
- In the ARTstor navigation menu click Organize > Save selected images to > Existing image group. Or, you may right- (or Control-) click with your mouse to display a shortcut menu. Right-click Save selected images to> Existing image group.
- A new window will open, displaying a list of the folders and existing image groups available to you.
- Click the image group title to select a destination for your images and click Save at the bottom of the window to save your changes.
Rearrange images in an image group
- Login to your ARTstor account. Click here for instructions on how to register for an ARTstor account.
- Open your image group.
- Click a thumbnail and hold down the mouse button while dragging that image into position. As you drag your mouse, a thumbnail placeholder will appear as a narrow line indicating the space between thumbnails. If you are not able to drag a thumbnail, you may be trying to drag and drop images in an ARTstor collection, set of search results, or another user's image group. Since you do not have write access to these sets of images, you will not be able to drag and drop thumbnails.
- Once you have positioned the thumbnail, release your mouse button. The image will drop into place.
- Repeat these steps as necessary to rearrange the images in your group. Then, save your changes.
Edit a large image group
If your group spans more than a single screen, you may view your group on a single page to rearrange the images.
- Log in to your ARTstor account. Click here for instructions on how to register for an ARTstor account.
- Open your image group.
- Go to the ARTstor navigation menu and click Display Options > Display image group on single page. Please note: If this option is not available you may not be logged into your account or you are viewing an image group that you cannot edit.
- Your group will open on a single, scrollable page, which you can use to rearrange thumbnails without having to move between multiple pages.
- Go to the ARTstor navigation menu and click Display Options > Display small thumbnails or Display large thumbnails, depending on your preference.
Sort images in an image group
- Log in to your ARTstor account. Click here for instructions on how to register for an ARTstor account.
- Open your image group.
- There are three choices for sorting your images: alphabetically by Title, alphabetically by Creator, or chronologically by Date. Select a sorting order from the navigation area in the upper left corner of the page. These options are also available from the Display Options navigation menu, as well as the right- (or Control-) click shortcut menu. Click Sort images by... > and select Title, Creator/Artist, or Date. Choose the desired sort order and the thumbnails in your group will arrange themselves accordingly. A checkmark will appear next to the chosen data sort to indicate that it has been selected.
- To un-sort the images, click the sort order marked with the checkmark. The checkmark will disappear and the images will rearrange themselves accordingly.
- To select a different sort order, click on the desired sort order and the images will rearrange themselves. A checkmark will appear next to the chosen sort order.
- Save your changes to preserve the image sort within your group.
Delete images from an image group
- Log in to your ARTstor account. Click here for instructions on how to register for an ARTstor account.
- Open your image group.
- Select images by single-clicking thumbnail images. The thumbnails will become highlighted in orange. to de-select an image, click the thumbnail again and the highlight will disappear.
- Go to the ARTstor navigation menu and click Organize > Delete selections from image group. Or, you may right- (or Control-) click with your mouse to select the same option from a shortcut menu.
- A window will open, prompting you to confirm the deletion. Click Delete to complete the process.
- Save your changes.
Save an image group
- Log in to your ARTstor account. Click here for instructions on how to register for an ARTstor account.
- Open your image group to view the images as thumbnails.
- Edit your group, whether adding, rearranging, sorting, or deleting the images.
- Go to the ARTstor navigation menu and click Organize > Save image group. This option is also available from the right- (or Control-) click shortcut menu.
Delete an image group
- Log in to your ARTstor account. Click here for instructions on how to register for an ARTstor account.
- Open your image group.
- Go to the ARTstor navigation menu and click Organize > Delete image group.
- A new window will open, prompting you to confirm the deletion. Click Delete to complete the process.
Quick Tip
If you have registered for Instructor Privileges, there is an alternative method for deleting an Image Group.
- Log in to your ARTstor account.
- Go to the ARTstor navigation menu and click Share > Manage folder(s).
- A new window will open, displaying a list of your folders. Click the plus sign (+) next to any folder title to expand its contents.
- Select the desired image group.
- Click Delete at the bottom of the window.
- A new window will open, prompting you to confirm the deletion. Click OK to complete the process.
Rename an image group
- Log in to your ARTstor account. Click here for instructions on how to register for an ARTstor account.
- Open your image group.
- Go to the ARTstor navigation menu and click Organize > Rename image group.
- A window will open, prompting you to enter a new name for your group. Type a new name into the field provided. Do not use symbols (e.g., ? /\ <>+ # %) or diacritics (e.g., é å ï ñ ô) when naming image groups.
- Click Rename at the bottom of the window.
- A new dialog box will confirm that your image group has been successfully renamed. Click OK.
Copy an image group
- Log in to your ARTstor account. Click here for instructions on how to register for an ARTstor account.
- Open your image group.
- Go to the ARTstor navigation menu and click Organize > Save image group as... This option is also available from the right- (or Control-) click shortcut menu.
- A new window will open, displaying a list of the folders available to you. The current folder location will be displayed by default. If you want to save to a different folder, click the folder title for the desired destination for your copy.
- Enter a name for the copy into the field provided. Do not use symbols (e.g., ? /\ <>+ # %) or diacritics (e.g., é å ï ñ ô) when naming image groups.
- If you choose to save the copy into the same folder as the original group you will have to enter a unique name. If you try to enter a name that already exists within the folder, a dialog will open, prompting you to confirm that you want to overwrite that image group with the copy. If you don't want to do this, simply enter a different name for the copy of the image group.
- If you choose to save the copy into a different folder you can enter a name identical to the original image group. Or, you may also give the copy a different name, as long as it doesn't already exist in the target location.
- Click Save at the bottom of the window to save your copy. Or, you can click Save & Open to view the copy of your image group as thumbnails.
Print an image group
- Open an image group.
- Go to the ARTstor navigation menu and click Share > Print image group > and select:
- Full record: prints full ARTstor data records
- Brief record with commentary: prints brief object information (Creator, Title, Date), along with any instructor's commentary
- Brief record with personal notes: prints brief object information (Creator, Title, Date), along with any personal notes
- A new, print-ready browser window will open, containing a header with the title of your group, followed by thumbnails of the images accompanied by their data records.
- Go to your web browser's File toolbar menu and select the Print option. You may also use the Ctrl- (or
) P keyboard shortcut.

Add Personal notes
- Log in to your ARTstor account. Click here for instructions on how to register for an ARTstor account.
- Find the images that you want to save into an image group by searching or browsing ARTstor's collections.
- While viewing thumbnail images, click the caption underneath any image.
- A new window will open, displaying information about the work depicted in the image. Click the "Personal notes" tab at the top of this window. This tab contains a free-text field that you can use to enter notes, which will only be viewable to you when you are logged in to your ARTstor account. Click once into the blank text field to begin typing in your comments.
- Click Save at the bottom of the window to save your changes.
Search Personal notes
Keywords entered in the "Personal notes" tab will be searchable in ARTstor after a couple of hours. Once your notes are indexed by the system, you will be able to search them by going to the ARTstor navigation menu and clicking Find > Search notes.
