Remote access means that you are trying to access ARTstor from outside the range of IP (Internet Protocol) addresses authorized for your institution. ARTstor authenticates its users by their IP addresses, numbers that identify every computer on the Internet, including those physically located on your campus. Therefore, when you try to access ARTstor from off campus - i.e., while working at home or while you are travelling - your IP address will not match those that we have on file for your institution. To identify you as a valid ARTstor user, you must use one of the following methods for remote access:

Proxy server

Many institutions provide remote access to restricted electronic resources, like ARTstor, through a proxy server. The proxy server acts as an intermediary - intercepting, filtering, and forwarding requests from remote users onto those licensed resources. In doing so, it makes it appear as if a remote user is working on campus from within the institution's valid IP range, even while they are working off campus.

  1. First, logon to your institution's proxy server.
Often times, institutions will post instructions for how to connect to their proxy server directly on the library's web site. If you cannot locate this information, please contact someone in your library or in the Instructional Technology department to find out how to logon to the proxy server.
  2. Next, direct your web browser to http://www.artstor.org.
  3. Then, click on the red "Go" button in the upper right corner of the page.
  4. Doing so will launch the ARTstor Digital Library and land you on the Welcome Page.
  5. Once on the Welcome Page, you may begin searching and browsing for images.

Remote Access Grace Period

If your institution does not have a proxy server, there is an alternative method of accessing ARTstor remotely. If you register for an ARTstor account, you can take advantage of the Remote Access Grace Period, which grants all registered users temporary access to ARTstor from outside their institution's IP range. Each time you logon to your ARTstor account from a valid IP address - i.e. on campus at your institution, or via your institution's proxy server - you are granted 120 days of remote access to the ARTstor Digital Library. In order to reset the grace period, all you need to do is log in to your ARTstor account again from a valid IP address. This will restart the Remote Access Grace Period clock, resetting it to the maximum length of time, 120 days.

  1. Register for an ARTstor account while you are on campus.
If you are already off campus, login to your institution's proxy server first. Then, access ARTstor as outlined above and register for an account. If you do not have access to a proxy server, you will have to go back on campus to register for an ARTstor account.
  2. When you want to use ARTstor off campus, direct your web browser to http://www.artstor.org.
  3. Click Go in the upper right corner of the page.
  4. You will be prompted to enter your ATstor login and password. Next, click Submit.
  5. Once you enter this information, ARTstor will check whether or not you have logged onto your account from a valid IP address within the last 120 days.
    • If you have, you will go directly into the ARTstor Digital Library. A confirmation message will appear, letting you know how many days are left in your Remote Access Grace Period. Click OK to continue.
    • If you get a message that your Remote Access Grace Period has expired, you can reset it by logging in to your ARTstor account from on campus or through your institution's proxy server.
  6. If you have time left on your Remote Access Grace Period, you will land on the front page of the ARTstor Digital Library, where you can search and browse for images.

Troubleshooting off-campus access

Having trouble accessing ARTstor from home or off-campus?

  • Do you have a strong connection to the internet, and sufficient bandwidth? ARTstor is not compatible with dial-up connections, and lower bandwidth connections will have decreased performance.
  • If you have not done so, please add *.artstor.org as a trusted site, or disable popup blockers.
  • Verify that your computer meets the tech requirements to run ARTstor, including installing Java and Flash.
  • If you are on a laptop that you use at both school and home, it is possible that some conflicting cached information will disrupt your attempt to log in to ARTstor. In this case, please clear you browser and java caches, and restart your browser.
  • If you still have trouble with off-campus access, contact your library or ARTstor User Services.
