Thumbnail icons
There are several icons that might appear next to an image thumbnail. Click these icons to access additional features.
- Click on
(the IAP icon) to download an image available for use in the Images for Academic Publishing program from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
- Click on
(the clustered image icon) to view other ARTstor images of the same work, either duplicates or details.
- Click on
(the associated images icon) to discover which other images are most frequently saved with the lead image by instructor users in ARTstor.
- Click on
(the QTVR icon) ) to launch a Quick Time Virtual Reality file of the image.
- Click on
(the audio file icon) to play an accompanying audio file.
IAP images
IAP images are available for publication, as part of the Images for Academic Publishing program. For more information, please see the Images for Academic Publishingsection of ARTstor's web site.
- Click
(the IAP icon ) to download a high resolution file for publication. A new window will open explaining the process. If you are eligible for the program, click Proceed. In the next window, click Download.
- In the next window, review the IAP Terms & Conditions of Use. You may also print this window for reference with the print link at the end of the document. Check the box indicating that you have read and accept these terms before clicking Continue.
- Provide the information requested in the space provided. Click Download.
- Two windows will open. One warns this download will take some time. The other shows your computer’s directory, where you can choose a place to save this file and continue to download as usual.
Clustered images
Other images of the same work, whether duplicates or details, have been clustered behind this preferred image.
- Click
(the clustered image icon) to view the other images, which will display on a new thumbnail page.
- To return to your original page, click on your browser's back button.
Associated images
Discover the collective preferences of ARTstor users by exploring which images are most frequently used and associated with others in ARTstor image groups.
- Click
(the associated images icon) to go to a new thumbnail page. This page displays, in order of frequency, other ARTstor images most frequently saved to image groups with the lead image by instructor users.
- To return to your original page, click on your browser's back button.
QTVR files
QuickTime Virtual Reality (QTVR) files are photographic panoramas that allow you to view an environment by panning 360° around a central point.
- Click
(the QTVR icon). This will launch the image in a QuickTime Player window. Please note: You will need QuickTime Player installed on your computer to view these files. You can download a free copy of this software online.
- Once the QTVR file has loaded in the QuickTime Player window, click into the window and drag the pointer in various directions to pan the view. The image will respond to your movements, allowing you to turn 360° within the displayed space
- Use the
icons to zoom-out and zoom-in to the image.
Quick tip
If you are viewing a QTVR file from the Mellon International Dunhuang Archive, you have access to an additional icon in the lower left corner of the QuickTime Player window. Click
(the Show Hot Spots icon) to display several blue zones within the image. Click into these blue zones to change your vantage point within the cave that you are viewing.
Audio files

- Click
(the audio file icon).
- 2. A new window with your default audio file player will launch to play the clip.
